Youth Referee Program

AYSO Region 54 Youth Referee Program

Kids as young as 12 years old are permitted to officiate matches in the U10 division and below.  Refereeing in AYSO is a terrific way to help kids learn responsibility and build self-confidence.  As the kids enter high school, they have opportunities to manage more challenging matches and even earn High School Community Service credits as AYSO referees.

The AYSO Youth Referee Program is an opportunity for youths age 12 or above to participate as referees.

All referees must be at least two years older than the divisions they referee.

Experienced adult referee mentor are available to help new youth referees.

Refereeing the Games

U6 division:
Coaches can referee their own game. Referee points are not needed.

U8 division:  Games should be refereed by certified referees who at minimum took the online Regional Referee Course.  Referee points are not needed.

U10, U12 and U14 divisions:  Volunteers who attended In-Person Regional Referee training or Online Referee training & In-Person Field training, and passed the course are certified to referee U10, U12, and U14 games (AR only).   Referees can sign up on Matchtrak as CR (Center Referee) or AR (Assistant Referee).

Referee Zero Tolerance Policy

There will be ZERO-tolerance on negative criticism or verbal abuse of youth referees.

Please make it enjoyable for referees to ref. especially the YOUTH REFEREES.

Why Should You Become an AYSO Referee?

Why should you become an AYSO Referee? The kids need you!

No referee = No game

The referee's number #1 concern is to keep the game as safe as possible for the players.  The referee is responsible for enforcing the Laws of the Game in such a way as to keep the game SAFE, FAIR and FUN for everyone.

We provide training, uniforms and equipment.  You choose the matches you wish to officiate.
More importantly, it's rewarding and working with kids is great fun!

Referee Points

Each team is responsible for providing a team of referees (one center and two assistant referees) for half of their season or at least 5 games.

Referee Points:
a) One point for Center Referee
b) One point for Assistant Referee
c) Minimum requirement for the Area playoffs = 15 referee points
